Greenbrier Geocache Trail
Looking for a fun, outdoor activity this spring? Check out the Greenbrier Geocache Trail, developed by Friends of the Lower Greenbrier River (FOLGR)! This new, member-driven project was created to add recreational value to our watershed, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore its features while also educating the public about the unique history of our river.
Geocaching is a fun, family-friendly hide-and-seek activity with GPS coordinates. People hide caches and then post the cache’s GPS coordinates online at www.geocaching.com. Anyone can access the website for free and search for caches (using a GPS device) that are hidden wherever they live and travel. Caches can be of all shapes and sizes but are typically small Tupperware containers, containing a log book, small trading items (coins, buttons, etc.), and information specific to the location. If you find a cache, you are not required to leave a trading item, but if you take one you should leave one out of courtesy to others.
The Greenbrier Geocache Trail includes 9 caches placed from Caldwell to Hinton along the Greenbrier River. To find our caches, search for “Greenbrier Geocache Trail” at the website listed above and make an expedition of it! If you don’t live in the lower Greenbrier River watershed, you can hide and seek caches in your area, too.

WV Consumer Drug Return Parntership
“Pharmaceuticals, both the medicines your doctor prescribes and over-the-counter treatments you purchase at your local pharmacy contain powerful chemicals that can have adverse effects on the environment. Beyond the environmental concerns posed by pharmaceuticals, unused and unwanted medicines can have catastrophic effects on communities. Unintentional deaths through poisoning and abuse, diversion (illegal use of prescriptions) and crime all stem from excess medications in our home medicine cabinets,” West Virginia Rivers Coalition.
To help improve water quality and eliminate these chemicals from our water supply, Friends of the Lower Greenbrier River is sponsoring the Alderson Pharmacy as a drug take-back location. Simply bring your unused or unwanted medications, no controlled substances, to the pharmacist and they will be disposed of properly. Our efforts are part of a larger movement in West Virginia called the WV Consumer Drug Return Partnership and is headed by the WV Rivers Coalition. For more information contact the FOLGR office or visit www.wvrivers.org. Other participating pharmacies in the area include: the Greenbrier Medical Arts Pharmacy, the Greenbrier Medical Arts Pharmacy Express, and the Union Pharmacy.
Membership
We have been a volunteer organization since 1990 and have since then offered membership without cost. In these difficult financial times we, the FOLGR board, have voted to take our commitment to the next level and ask that you and your family help support the work we are doing. For as little as $15 a year for an individual, $25 for a family, or $100 for a business you can become a member of FOLGR and help with the costs associated with the educational events, restoration projects, and other program costs.
You may still be a member of FOLGR if you are not able to pay the membership fee; however, you will not have a vote at member meetings. You can sign-up online or by mailing your information and donation to:

Marcellus Shale
Have you heard about Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling? FOLGR is very concerned about Marcellus Shale drilling. We support and advocate for practices and regulations that maintain or improve the quality, quantity, and health of our water resources. This type of drilling has serious water implications in the Lower Greenbrier River. We support community efforts by providing science and data support for outreach activities and attend local meetings as an active voice. Check out this website for more information and local updates: http://savethewatertable.org/
The WV Rivers Coalition has completed a report on Marcellus shale for the state of West Virginia. Follow this link for a .PDF version of the report: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxmb2xncmJvYXJkfGd4OjE1NmEyZDdhNzlmYmI2NGQ
